  • ezmrlda invited us to share our memories of favorite foods.
I will try. Food has always been important to me.
The first time I ever had pizza was when I was 12 years old. My Dad has never liked foreign food of any kind, and that included anything Italian. He hated spaghetti. Pizza was out of the question because while he was in the Navy during WWII he ate pizza in Italy. It was, according to him, made with tomato paste and stale flat bread. It was awful!
Well, my mother was always adventurous when it came to food. And after years of cooking for a family of ten, she welcomed the thought of getting out of the kitchen as often as possible. So many Friday nights, we ordered pizza. Luckily, the closest pizza parlor was in Canton and it was Pizza Oven. They have, for as long as I have known, made rectangular pizzas. Our first pizza had everything on it except anchovies, which Mom knew she did not like. It had the sauce, then pepperoni, then sausage that is ground so fine that the flavor of it is infused in every bite instead of chunks here and there. on top of this is green peppers, black olives, onions and cheese. The crust is the best. I suppose it would be considered a pan type. It is not flat but not overly fluffy and it has the best flavor.
My Dad wouldn’t eat it when we had it and Mom would make him a special dinner. This went on for years, until finally Mom told him we were having pizza, and if he didn’t want any he could find something else to eat. Well, he ate two pieces, pronouncing it inedible.
But he continued to join us in our bi-weekly treat, under the cover that he didn’t want to go hungry.
I was thirty-four when they moved to NM. After their first year there, they had only one request- Pizza Oven Pizza. And DAD was the one that missed it the most! Luckily, there are many other pizza connoiseuers out there. Pizza Oven can ship all over the US and even though it cost us, Mom and Dad got their Christmas wish. Every time they came home to visit they were sure to stop at Pizza oven at least twice every trip and stopped on their way out of town for some travelling food.
To this day, I like other pizzas, but none tastes as good.
It didn’t take Dad as long to get over his spaghetti hatred. Mom always made good homemade spaghetti and he preferred it until he tasted the spaghetti made with homemade noodles at the Italian-American Club at Waynesburg. We would take a Dutch oven over there and order three takeout dinners and get enough spaghetti to feed six of us with leftovers! It was SO GOOD! When I graduated from high school and nursing school we ordered their spaghetti for the parties. I don’t know if they still do the spaghetti dinners on Saturdays or not. I still smile when I think of the great spaghetti though.
By now you realize Dad likes foreign food now.
There is a restaraunt in Lincoln, NM that serves a really great hamburger topped with green chilis. It was one of the best I ever had.
My brother introduced me to gyros when I was in college. One evening he showed up at my dorm with a bunch of gyros he had bought at the Athens restaurant in Canton. It was great! I love to stop there any time I have tests at Aultman Hospital.
When my brother was living in New London, CT, we were introduced to grinders. The bread seems to be the secret to this sub sandwich. Love it!
One of my favorite things is when my sister makes french onion soup. She is a great cook and her soup is the best I have ever tasted. She needs some work on duplicating Mom’s prowess for making the “dressing” for the Thanksgiving turkey. When it comes down to it, That is my favorite food. Even when Mom swears she has screwed it up, it is the greatest. I remember helping her mix it every Thanksgiving morning and I was always the taste tester because she knew it was my favorite and I enjoyed it the most. I have watched her so many times but can never make it taste as good as hers, but I think mine is better than my sister’s.
Hmmm…after writing and reading this, I can understand why gastric bypass was necessary!
    Have a good day!

  • Mike and I celebrated our 16th anniversary on Oct. 28th. The following
song was sung at our reception by Dan Huscusson, a family friend. It
means a lot to me and in honor of our anniversary I figured I’d put the
words on here. I would like to put the music on here too, but i’m not
sure how to do it. Any pointers?

Here’s All of Me- Dan Huscusson

This is the day we’ve been waiting for
Dreamed about, talked about for years.
Now here we stand hand in hand as one,
    Exchanging our sacred marriage vows
    Here is my heart
    I give it faithfully
    Here is my love
    Yours for eternity
    Here is my hand
Come walk through life with me

Here is my heart, here is my love, here’s all of me
Here is my heart, here is my love, here’s all of me

I am just a country boy,
And you just a country girl
A lot of fancy words have all been said before
    Now ours are plain
But they’ll mean so much more

    Here is my heart
    I give it faithfully
    Here is my love
    Yours for eternity
    Here is my hand
Come walk through life with me

Here is my heart, here is my love, here’s all of me
Here is my heart, here is my love, here’s all of me

    Here is my heart
    I give it faithfully
    Here is my love
    Yours for eternity
    Here is my hand
Come walk through life with me

Here is my heart, here is my love, here’s all of me
Here is my heart, here is my love, here’s all of me

    Below
are pictures of my lovely labs, Cali and Boomer. Otherwise known as
Beauty and the Beast. We took a walk in the woods in order to get fall
pics to use next year. The other two dogs and the cat stayed home. They
    wanted a rest.

  • First, Thanks to all for the birthday wishes.  I have been busy
with work and Doctors since, but want y’all to know I appreciate all of
    you. Thank you.

I started a 4 day stretch of work on my birthday.  It was actually
fun, because a few of the residents wished me a happy birthday as I was
giving them their meds. One of my fellow nurses gave me a bracelet and
a cup  along with a great card.  Thursday started with a
meeting before work.  All of the nurses attended.  I worked
my shift and was rather surprised when I got a call at 7:30 from a
young nurse, reporting off.  Now usually I am compassionate and
caring when someone reports off.  But this lady had a pattern
developing.  I was nice, but not terribly compassionate.  I
asked only the reason for the report off.  (daughter was sick) I
called all the other nurses and offered them the shift, but I stayed
and worked the next shift until 4 am. ( a day shift nurse came in two
hours early).  Friday was a busy night and I was the only nurse,
plus a few resident  and staff problems.  I had traded with
another nurse and was working Saturday afternoon.  At nine that
night, the same young nurse called off again.  I definitely was
not nice with that report off.  It seems her husband had her car
and she couldn’t come in at 11, as scheduled.  I called the boss
lady and told her I had blown up with my colleague.  She laughed
and said she would take care of the situation.  She didn’t scold
me for overstepping my bounds, which I am sure I did.  I called
all the other nurses and offered them the shift, otherwise it would be
another shift for me.  Luckily, the lady I had traded with came in
and worked the 11-7 shift.  She was not a happy camper either, but
we commiserated and wished evil upon our lax nursing “friend”.

The next day, the boss lady called the “friend” and told her to stay
home that night.  She also told her she might consider resigning
instead of being fired because it would look better on her resume, but
as of yet, she has not taken up the offer.  She is totally off the
    schedule.

Luckily, the nurse who left us for another job a couple of weeks ago,
has returned and this time at full time.  She didn’t like her
other job, even though it was way more money and a day schedule.
Now she works all three shifts to fill in.

The other full time nurse on afternoons has also called off for the
week, but her back went out on her.  This has been a chronic
complaint for her.  We other nurses are not mad at her, however,
because she has a real problem.  The young nurse had a string of
excuses and worked only three days a pay and called off all but two
scheduled days in the past eight weeks!

Another nurse took vacation days so she could move.  We feel she
has worked there for 15 years and deserves her time off, so we have
been trying to fill in the blanks with the nurses who are left.
It is working out. But we’ll be glad when it is over.

I went to the cardiologist on monday for a checkup and it was
good.  Don’t have to see him for another year.  Tuesday I
went to the endocrinologist and my Vit. D level is still low.
Then I went shopping at Target and got some really cute tops for $5
each.  As I was leaving Canton, my cell phone rang, which is very
unusual as only my son, my husband and my parents have the
number.  it was the kid’s school.  Seems he had an
earache.  Thankfully they reached me before I got home. The school
is nearly an hour from home but only 20 minutes from Canton.  He
not only had an earache but mild bronchitis.  He stayed home
yesterday and today.  I am waiting for the antibiotics to
work.  He probably won’t be working the Trail of Terror this
weekend.  He likes the job, but it rains almost every weekend, and
I don’t think he needs to be out in the elements after being
sick.  The job is over after this weekend.  Maybe he can find
a job somewhere that is sheltered. Hopefully.

Yesterday, I got results form the wellness program through work.
I rated good to excellent in all categories but was somewhat taken
aback to be chastised for a blood pressure of 120/80.  This is
    what it says,

“Elevated blood pressure damages the heart, arteries, kidneys, and
eyes.  Pressures of 140/90+ are high.  Desired is less than
120/80 and 120/80 to 139/89 is pre-hypertension.  Your pressure is
120/80 and is above the recommended range.”

New blood pressure guidelines were established a couple of years
ago.  But I am thinking the medical profession is having a tough
time getting behind them, as there are always smiles when a blood
pressure is below 140/90. They are not too awful concerned with the
pre-hypertension category, especially when we were taught a “normal” BP
    is 120/80.

I was not taken aback to be told that I have excess fat.  But it
is ONLY 22 lbs, compared to the 165 lbs extra I used to carry.
But they weren’t aware of that.  22 sounds easier to get
    off.

Well, if you’re still awake, I am going to say bye for this time.  i hope to be back sooner, but only time will tell.

    There is a protected post.

The following are pictures of my boys: Roger, the human; Boomer, the big one; and Cubby, the brown medicine dog.

  • It’s been a busy couple of weeks for me.  Sorry I haven’t posted in a while.
I’ve been worrying about Roger and his friends as they’ve been hit with
another death.  A young man’s body was found in the Tuscarawas
River last week.  It was identified as an 18 year old that hung
out at Park Place in New Phila.  Roger knew him as an
acquaintance.  He was stabbed and his head crushed with a brick
before he was dumped in the river.  Three other young people, a
girl and two boys, admitted to killing him.  They were aided by a
42 year old woman.  WTF?  Here’s the story:http://www.timesreporter.com/archive/left_archive.php?ID=46278&r=0
Right now, I would like to say to Lettuce  and all others  that I am sorry for the loss of your friend.
This is all I have right now.
Please, if you’re given to do so, pray for this family.

  • Too Cute Not to Send

    :

All the organs of the body were having a meeting, trying to decide who was the one in charge.

“I should be in charge,” said the brain , “Because I run all the body’s systems, so without me nothing would happen.”

“I should be in charge,” said the blood, “Because I circulate oxygen all over so without me you’d all waste away.”

“I should be in charge,” said the stomach,” Because I process food and give all of you energy.”

“I should be in charge,” said the legs, “because I carry the body wherever it needs to go.”

“I should be in charge,” said the eyes, “Because I allow the body to see where it goes.”

“I should be in charge,” said the rectum, “Because I’m responsible for waste removal.”

All the other body parts laughed at the rectum And insulted him, so in a huff, he shut down tight.

Within a few days, the brain had a terrible headache, the stomach was
bloated, the legs got wobbly, the eyes got watery, and the blood Was
toxic. They all decided that the rectum should be the boss.

    The Moral of the story?

The asshole is usually in charge !!

If you don’t send this to at least 8 people….

    who gives a Shit

  • I want to have a wiener roast in October.  I want to invite all my
friends and everyone can bring a dish and we can just talk and laugh
all evening into the night.  I have a friend with a guitar (dan
huscusson, he has the first song on the compilation I have chosen) and
he can sing as long as he wans to, and fun will be had by all.
There could be a wagon ride up into the woods and little kids would
love that. I just want a night of fellowship and fun. Doesn’t that
sound great?  Of course we would have it at my grandmother’s farm,
coz that is where Mom and Dad are, and I want them to be able to enjoy
it also.  I might have to further this plan along.

When I came home from work last night, my husband said with a great
deal of awe in his voice, “That black dog sure is one TOUGH son of a
    (gun)!”
I asked what brought on this new found respect for the four legged
destruction crew.  he looked at me, with a tired, resigned look,
and said, “Well, I ran over him today and you can’t even tell it.”
      ?
He went on to say, while I was recovering from that simple statement,
“I looked for any dogs laying under the car before I got in.  I
didn’t see any. I backed up and got a sick feeling as I felt first one
bump and then a second.  Then the lughead was walking away toward
the pine tree and he was only limping slightly.”
I remembered Boomer coming out from under the pine tree when I went out
of the house an hour later and he was just as goofy as ever and I
noticed he wasn’t limping.  I noticed this because he has been
limping on and off for the past three weeks.
But I had to go to the door and call Boomer in just to make sure he was
okay.  I checked him all over and he was fine!

Maybe it’ll slow him down some.  On our morning walks he sometimes
likes to drag me, if i’m not paying attention.  Too bad it won’t
keep him from chewing up everything that isn’t nailed down.  I
bought five pots of mums last week.  I did not put them out in my
flower garden because anything I put in the ground my “groundskeeper
“  takes right back out.  And then lays there with the plant
between his paws and that silly pink tongue hanging out the side of his
mouth.    So I put them up on the table outside the
front door.  There were five until Friday.  Then one
    disappeared.  ……
Mike found remnants of it scattered in the back yard and the pot torn
up all over the place!  But at least that was the only thing this
week.  Hey!  things are looking up!

I was going to write in my blog every day, but Thursday I worked 21 and
    1/2 hours!  I worked from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the group home,
supposedly just a med pass.  That’s a whole rant in itself.
Then I was at the nursing home from  2:30  P.m. until  7
a.m. on Friday.  Reason being , the midnight nurse called off and
there was no one to replace her. So i stayed over.  I called
Mike  at work and told him not to expect me home that night and he
said  I  needed to be careful and not get sick.  At
about 4 a.m.  I started getting a sore throat and by the time
7  rolled around I was well on my way to  having the
virus everyone at the nursing home has!   So  I slept
all  day  and most of Saturday.  Then I went back to
work at 3 p.m.  on Saturday.  Yesterday, I tried to catch up
with some (very little) house work, then off to work.  I had today
off and went to visit the parents.  It was fun, and the food was
great!  I work tomorrow afternoon then again at 11 p.m. on
Thursday.  Hopefully no more doubles for a while.

I  have also started the President’s Fitness Challenge
again.  I started once back in January, but was forced to quit
after five weeks due to health problems.  This time I am making
sure I am taking all my supplements so I don’t faint again.

  • Urethra! (nod to the Angry
Beavers)  I think I may have a bit of a clue as to why Rog and I
have been disagreeing so much lately.  He is a verrrrrrry allergic
person and this is ragweed season, one of his greatest
irritations.  You would think, having lived with him all his life,
that I would remember this…but alas, I evidently only live in the
minute.  I eventually figure it out.

He is home from school today because he has two huge lumps on the back
of his head that must be lymph nodes or sinuses.  He has a
headache and nausea.  He’s got a doctor’s appointment at 11. At
least since he had his uvula removed in December he isn’t missing
school as often.  I think he had the flu once and then
    today.  Not bad.

Throughout his school history (12 years) he has missed at least two
days of the first week of school and then an average of 17 days per
school year, all due to illness. He at least attended 5 full days of
school this school year before missing!!  I know it doesn’t sound
very impressive at all but this is unprecedented.  Allergies are a
    bitch for him.

And he likes school this year.

He came home from visiting his girlfriend last night and was stressing
over the fact that gas may go up to $3.50 per gallon. He was also
concerned about the Katrina aftermath.  I listened to his concerns
and told him he would still be able to visit his friends and go to
    practice.  He calmed down.

My heart and prayers go out to all those affected by Katrina.  If
I weren’t working, I would volunteer to go down to help out with
medical concerns.  I will just have to see what I can do from here.

    Have a good day!

  • This week’s Photo Challenge is Night Visions, hosted by Kubli420

I took this picture a few weeks ago.  It is looking across the
field at the moon. I wanted to catch the moonlight on the tree
    branches, but was unable.

This is a cheat- it was taken at night, but we were inside in poor lighting. That bass player is my son.

This is another shot of the field across the road.  you can just see the tree branches in the upper left corner.

I took this in the winter.  I thought the clouds were really cool.

This also was taken last winter (duh)  I like the way the snowflakes reflected the weak flash.
